Your Idea, Their Expertise:

It doesn’t take long for home improvement projects to get out of hand. Painting the family room? You got this. Hanging a ceiling fan? Uh, okay, have at it. Ripping out your old master bath vanity, replacing it with custom cabinetry and a granite countertop and adding a new glass block walk-in shower? Well, that escalated quickly.
Whether you’ve been in your home for 20 years or 20 months, chances are there are areas of the house that could stand a makeover. You have an idea of what you want the finished product to look like. Maybe you’ve seen your dream kitchen in a magazine or the perfect basement with game room and wet bar on Pinterest. But where do you start? Navigating the endless choices of colors, fabrics, textures and architectural designs is not for the faint of heart. You need the guiding hand of a professional every step of the way. Enter Nicholas Construction.
“We’re very hands-on,” says Kyle Nicholas, president of the four-year-old company. “Our process and who we are is what differentiates us from others.” Nicholas Construction’s basic philosophy is to cater to the client. Through three stages – design, selection and construction – they work to make sure the finished product is just what the customer had in mind.
It starts with a feasibility study, or as Nicholas likes to call it, “a heartbeat check. Making sure the budget aligns with the customer’s end goal,” he says. Next is a visit to the client’s home by Lead Designer Laura Sherrell. She walks through the entire house to get a feel for the layout and looks at any of the inspirational photos that the homeowner has drawn their ideas from (even those Pinterest images), often spending as much as two hours to get the whole scope of the project.
“Initially, we base (our design) off the function of the space first and how it’s going to flow and what the design’s going to look like,” says Sherrell. “Then we get into the finish selections’ phase of choosing colors and textures and that kind of thing.” Nicholas and Sherrell both believe it’s important to follow the customer’s design wishes as closely as possible, so the finished product is one everyone is happy with. However, sometimes those wishes won’t work physically or financially, and that can lead to some awkward moments when a homeowner needs to be told their plans may not work exactly as they had hoped.
“We’re not afraid to have difficult conversations,” says Nicholas. “When you’re hiring a design/build firm, you’re hiring us for our expertise. There are a lot of times we go into a space and take [the customer’s] inspiration, and then we have to work to get the functionality out of it.”
Nicholas also takes pride in his company’s ability to do a wide range of projects – from a straightforward kitchen remodel to a whole-house renovation. One project Nicholas was especially proud of was a basement renovation after a water remediation in a home in the Windermere neighborhood in Carmel. “We redid the bathroom and added a wet bar and custom millwork,” says Nicholas. “We added accent walls, all new flooring – carpet and hardwood – and even a movie theater.”
And always with their signature hands-on approach. “I handle all the project management. I don’t outsource it,” says Nicholas. “I’m very integrated from the get-go, and Laura does all the design work. For Laura and me, this is our pride and joy.” With that kind of commitment to superior workmanship and customer input, you can trust Nicholas Construction to make your home improvement dreams come true.
