Imagine you are at home one evening and the power goes out. Perhaps a storm caused the power outage, or maybe the reason is not immediately obvious. Either way, what is immediately obvious is that you have no electricity. And without electricity, the comforts and security your family have come to rely on are interrupted. Suddenly you find yourself without lights, TV or the internet. No operational home security system, heat or air conditioning, and the power to your refrigerator and that extra freezer in the garage has abruptly turned off. These are only a few of the many problems that may result from power outages. For many people in Hamilton County, this is not a hypothetical situation.

In 2019, nearly 50,000 homes and businesses were without electricity for some length of time due to storms or power outages. And if your home or business was among those impacted, you know the feeling of frustration and helplessness. Those feelings could have been avoided with an emergency standby generator from R & G Electrical.

R & G Electrical LLC is an authorized dealer/technician of generators manufacturers by Cummins, Briggs & Stratton Fortress and Generac. Romney Ellis, company owner and certified generator dealer/technician, recently discussed the various types of generator installations the company specializes in and the benefits to homeowners and businesses of investing in quality generators. He also shared the various electrical services the company provides.

All-Purpose Electrical Services

R & G Electrical has proudly provided expert electrical services for homes and businesses in the Carmel, Indiana, and surrounding areas since 2011. R & G specializes in a wide variety of electrical services, including running new electrical circuits, service panel installs, electrical troubleshooting, upgrades of lighting systems and working directly with general contractors for business and home renovation/remodels of all types. R & G also provides electrical installations on new construction homes and commercial buildings, and the company coordinates all work with the utility companies, homeowners and business owners. R & G has provided electrical lighting upgrades in places like Keystone at the Crossing and multiple storefronts in Carmel. The company enjoys working with Hamilton County communities and hopes to continue those great relationships by providing quality electrical service to its customers.

Factory-Authorized Generator Dealer

In 2012, R & G expanded its services by becoming an authorized generator dealer for Cummins, Briggs & Stratton Fortress and Generac generators—the leaders in emergency standby generators and automatic transfer switches. The standby emergency generators provided by R & G Electrical are all high-quality, top-of-the-line brands. The generators they sell are directly from the manufacturer and tested prior to arriving to your home or business. R & G does not warehouse generators, as big-box stores do, so their clients will receive a brand-new generator, fresh off the factory manufacturing line, and sent to their door.

“We are a factory-authorized sales and service dealer with technicians trained to install and service Cummins, Briggs & Stratton Fortress and Generac whole home and business generators,” said Ellis. “We are trained to provide on-the-spot generator sizing with software and programs to adequately fit you with a generator to meet your specific needs, site preparation and landscaping, and installations. As a factory-authorized generator dealer, R & G has access to manufacturer direct technical support and provides five-year service contracts to all our customers, so you receive the manufacturers’ required annual service. We are also trained to support warranty repairs on both the mechanical and electrical systems for your generator and automatic transfer switch. Parts are usually received from the manufacturers within 24 to 72 hours of the request, so you are not down with a fault within your generator system.”

Home & Small Business Generator Functionality

“What whole home or business generator does is provide a back-up power source. Once a power outage occurs, lights and everything is dead. Your automatic transfer switch senses the loss of utility power and communicates this loss to the generator. The generator starts within three seconds of your power shutting off, and immediately your lights are restored. Now once the utility power is restored, the automatic transfer switch communicates with the utility meter and automatically switches back to utility power within the transfer switch, and the generator halts delivering electric power to the home to allow utility power to be restored,” said Ellis. “Power will transfer to the generator, and it will power your whole home. You can continue on with life because you have a standby generator that is going to power your home or business just like it did when the utility power was available.”

Large Commercial & Agriculture Generator Installations

In addition to serving homeowners and small businesses, R & G Electrical also installs generators in larger commercial restaurants and businesses where electrical power is critically needed. “We are working with the Bloomington Fire Department to install a 60,000-watt diesel generator,” said Ellis. “Any size commercial building can be powered by a generator. We can go all the way up to 150,000 watts.” Ellis said a 150,000-watt generator can power an 80,000-square-foot building like the Indiana Design Center in downtown Carmel, while a 12,000-watt unit is enough to handle a 2,500-square-foot home. “When we install the [commercial] generator,” said Ellis, “Cummins and Briggs & Stratton Fortress representatives often like to come out and commission those generators because of the size and engineering. The ones that they’re passing on to the qualified dealer technicians—like R & G.”

From family farms to larger operations, R & G Electrical also provides service for agricultural needs. “Agriculture is always going to be different from residential and sometimes commercial,” said Ellis. “With agriculture, larger generators [diesel & liquid-cooled] are usually the best to install because of the amount of power needed. The generator may be powering part of the barn to keep horses and cattle warm, while also powering large equipment and the home.” Farmers do not have to use PTO machinery any longer to provide power to their specific needs with a professionally installed generator.

Factory Warranty Repairs & Service Contracts

Whether the generator is for an 80,000-square-foot commercial property or a 5,000-square-foot home, R & G Electrical follows a comprehensive checklist for the installation, start-up, and programming of your emergency standby generator. And if there is ever a problem, R & G provides warranty repairs by technicians trained to quickly troubleshoot and resolve the issue. “We also maintain factory dealer service manuals to ensure that your generator’s alternator is producing the proper voltage and cycles to handle a full load of your home and business under gas and electrical.” Ellis explained that quite often a generator is installed by a standard electrician who has not been trained to properly service or install generators, as we have stated. Over 90% of all R & G warranty or service calls for generators installed by the random general contractor and/or electrician is installed incorrectly. This means the generator usually cannot run at full capacity of designed usage, and many times they just do not start when an outage occurs.

“That’s what sets R & G Electrical apart from standard electrical service contractors. Our technicians are highly trained and qualified to install and service generators to manufacturer requirements, and they maintain product knowledge through continuing education classes and ongoing certifications.”

“Don't Get Caught with Your Power Down”

Another benefit of purchasing an emergency standby generator that is often overlooked are some possible insurance discounts. Ellis noted that some insurance companies are getting on board and understanding the benefits that home and business owners have in this investment and are trying to implement insurance discounts for structures, both residential and commercial, protected by a backup emergency standby generator installed and serviced by a certified factory-authorized dealer/technician.

Insurance companies recognize that property protected by a backup generator will result in fewer claims filed due to property damage in the case of power loss to a refrigerator, freezer, sump pump, farming equipment, etc. No more flooded basements, and no more loss of hundreds of dollars of food!
